Egon Hostovský was born in 1908 in Hronov to a Jewish family. He studied philosophy in Prague. During the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, he was in Paris. Following the occupation of Paris in 1940, he first went to Portugal and then migrated to the United States. Hostovský, whose family was killed in Nazi concentration camps, returned to his homeland in 1946 after the war. However, after the 1948 coup, he migrated to the United States, where he spent the remainder of his life. During his lifetime, his novels were translated into many European languages, and he stood out among his contemporaries. "The Hideout" is the first of his books to be translated into Turkish.
